What Is the Purpose of Creating?
This question is both the simplest and the most complex to answer. It is one that constantly evolves as perspectives and purpose shift. Today, I create because I must.
I don’t take for granted the privilege of being someone who gets to build beautiful things every day. But this gift is more than an invitation—it’s an obligation, a necessity to show the world what only I can see. Each of us is given a unique pair of spectacles, shaped by our experiences, knowledge, and emotions, allowing us to view the world in a way that no one else can. No two perspectives are the same, but every perspective matters.
As creators and artists, we each wear our own tinted lenses, but we are also given the ability to translate our vision into tangible expressions. These expressions allow others to step into a different world—one they may never have seen otherwise. Every time we experience life through someone else’s perspective, our own vision expands, adding new colors and depth. It is in this exchange that we truly begin to see the world in full color.
Nothing is ever truly new—not even a blank canvas, which already holds infinite potential. Every brushstroke is not just an addition but a subtraction, slowly revealing the masterpiece that was always within. I don’t approach creativity as filling an empty space but as uncovering something that has been waiting to be discovered—like a scientist stumbling upon a breakthrough.
Creativity is not about making something from nothing but about discovering what was always there. I like to imagine that every piece of art exists on an invisible plane long before the artist finds it. Our job as creators is to see beyond the surface and bring those hidden wonders to light. Just as scientists have a duty to share their discoveries, artists have an ethical and moral obligation to share their vision. Medicine may heal the body, but art nourishes the soul.
Art is more than personal expression; it is a collective experience, a cultural force that defines generations and leaves a legacy for those to come. Every work, every brushstroke, every chord is built upon the foundation laid by the creators before us—all the way back to the first Creator, capital C. Our creations echo a cosmic pulse of creativity that began with the formation of this world. When we craft masterpieces—stories, symphonies, films—we tap into the residual waves of that first creation. By stripping away the layers of earthly mediocrity, we uncover the divine.
